Am I a good candidate for male breast reduction?

Gynecomastia can enlarge the breasts, areolas, or both areas, and affect one or both sides. The best candidates for male breast reduction:

  • Are 18 or older
  • Maintain a healthy BMI
  • Have been screened for illnesses or medical issues that may cause gynecomastia

Dr. Wright may recommend including gynecomastia surgery in the surgical plan for patients after significant weight loss.

How does gynecomastia surgery work?

Dr. Wright performs male breast reduction as an outpatient procedure using either local anesthetic with IV sedation or general anesthetic. In some cases, liposuction is the only technique needed to achieve the desired results. If there is a significant amount of excess glandular tissue and skin or the areolas are enlarged, surgical excision is usually necessary. Dr. Wright takes care to place the incisions where the scars will be as inconspicuous as possible, such as along the edges of the areolas.

How long is recovery after a male breast reduction?

Patients are typically ready to return to non-strenuous jobs and daily activities within the first week, although experiences vary with the specifics of their surgery. You will need to wear a compression wrap around your chest to minimize swelling and encourage smooth contours as you heal. While Dr. Wright prescribes pain medication, discomfort is typically manageable with over-the-counter medicine.
